GLENDALE, AZ (NEWS1130) – Ray Whitney tied the game in the third period and then scored as the first shooter in the shootout, before Mikkel Boedker tallied the winner as the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Vancouver Canucks 2-1.
The Canucks took a 1-0 lead on their second powerplay of the game. Alex Edler put the puck on net from the righthand boards and it deflected off a pair of Coyotes before beating Mike Smith with 5:06 left in the first period.
New Canuck Zack Kassian had a tremendous chance to extend the Canucks lead in the second periods. After dishing the puck off to Henrik Sedin the big winger went hard to the net to receive a pass back, but Smith slid across and got a pad on it to keep it 1-0.
Cory Schneider kept the Canucks on top for most of the game, but after having trouble with a long dump-in from Keith Yandle, Whitney picked up the rebound and put it five-hole on the Canucks keeper with a backhand. The goal came on the Coyotes’ 30th shot of the game at the 9:43 mark of the third period.
In overtime, the Sedins had the best chance to end the game. Henrik slid a pass to brother Daniel on an odd-man rush, but once again Smith slid across to make the save.
In the shootout, Whitney scored before Edler and Mason Raymond were turned aside by Smith. That gave Boedker the chance to win the game, and he made no mistake as he beat Schneider with a slick move before firing the puck into the net.
With the win, the Coyotes finished the month of February with a record of 11-0-1. The Canucks wrapped-up their six-game road trip with a record of 3-1-2, and they’ll return home to face the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.
