TORONTO – The parents of a Canadian aid worker kidnapped in Kenya and rescued three days later in Somalia said they are hugely relieved their son is now safe.

Steven Dennis was one of four aid workers snatched at gunpoint near the Kenya-Somalia border on Friday and rescued Monday.

His mother, Carol-Ann Dennis, said Steven credits his big feet with helping to save the day because it helped trackers.

His father Peter Dennis says Steven’s wallet also came in handy when he was grazed by a bullet that hit the wallet he keeps in his front pocket.

Dennis of Toronto, and fellow Canadian, Qurat-Ul-Ain Sadazai, of Gatineau, Quebec, were among four aid workers taken at gunpoint from the huge Dadaab refugee camp inside Kenya near Somalia.

A pro-government Somali militia rescued them several kilometres inside Somalia in a mission that saw one of their captors killed.

Also kidnapped and rescued with them were Astrid Sehl of Norway and Glenn Costes, a Filipino who was shot during the initial kidnapping.
