Two people are dead after a small plane crashed onto a sports field in Vernon, British Columbia Saturday afternoon.
The plane ignited on impact, killing the two people on board. Bill Wilkie of the Vernon Flying Club says he saw the smoldering plane from the air after it slammed into a soccer field.
“All I saw was this big, plume of black smoke going up oh, probably 500 feet, with big flames at the bottom” Wilkie said.
RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk said investigators are asking any witnesses to tell them what they saw.
“A couple of skydivers may have recordings of some of the incidents that happened prior to the crash, so we’re going to have anybody that saw anything, or happened to be in the close area, if you have a photograph or whatever I’m sure it will be beneficial,” Molendyk said.
The twin-engine Piper 23 had just taken off from the Vernon Airport when witnesses say it clipped some trees before crashing and burning.
Police say the pilot was a 59-year-old man from Kelowna and his passenger was a 55-year-old Port Moody-area resident.
