A survey released Tuesday shows the nation’s capital has some of the worst traffic congestion in the continent.
The survey, done by TomTom and covering 26 major cities, found Ottawa to be the third most congested city in the country, behind only Toronto and Vancouver.
The capital was 10th most congested in North America. Los Angeles is the most congested city in North America.
The survey also found Ottawa had more congestion on non-highways, like Hunt Club Road and Riverside Drive than highways like the 417 and 174.
Many people at the World Exchange Plaze were not surprised to hear Ottawa ranked so highly.
“With it being the capital of Canada, there’s just so many people around this area,” said one man. “There’s always just lots of crazy roundabout roads and everything. It just gets you going in donuts for days.”
But others say they can’t believe Ottawa outranked cities like Montreal and Calgary, where the Deerfoot Trail commonly gets backed up for kilometres.
The average driver with a 30-minute commute spends 90 hours per year stuck in traffic.
The best times for traveling fall to and from work Monday and the most crowded times are Tuesday morning and Thursday evening.
