LONDON – There may be 11 days left, but Heathrow Airport in London is in full Olympic mode Monday, with thousands of athletes and coaches arriving for the summer games.
As a traveler you certainly wouldn’t want to be passing through Heathrow Monday, as it is expected to be the busiest day in the airport’s history.
Up to 240,000 people are expected to travel through the airport, with more than 121,000 arrivals alone.
“It’s a big, big day for this airport, seven years they’ve been planning for this,” said a reporter with Sky News.
“Twenty-million pounds worth of investment over those years, Heathrow is ready as far as Heathrow is concerned,” the reporter added.
The athletes and coaches will be processed and directed by bus and train to the Olympic Village, however traffic was moving at a crawl Monday morning, as a result of an accident on a designated route between the airport and heart of London.
Additional immigration officials and up to 3,500 soldiers have been brought in to help, after Nick Buckles, the head of the firm in charge of training personnel, realized they had underestimated the number of staff they would need to handle the influx of people.
“I think our assessment of how quickly we could move people through the pipeline clearly wasn’t good enough,” Buckles said.
The 2012 London Olympic Games get underway Friday, July 27.
