There could finally be some relief for Ontario farmers suffering through what’s being called the worst drought in nearly 50 years.
The McGuinty government has asked Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for help through the AgriRecovery framework, which is a disaster relief program for farms.
Many farmers have had to dip into their winter feed for their animals, while others have begun to sell cattle in order to break even.
“I think they have to do what ever it takes to keep livestock on the farms,” Dwight Foster of Foster’s Custom farming in North Gower told 1310News. “If these guys need help getting hay or getting feed, then that should be addressed immediately.”
Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is also calling on the federal government to give tax breaks to farmers in the hardest hit areas, which include farms in Renfrew County.
Ted McMeekin was touring farms in the area, including Foster’s Custom Farming in order to try and secure aid from Agriculture and Agri-foods Canada.
McMeekin, however, told media the province would not be offering farmers any additional funding to help with their crops and animals.
The federal government has 45 days to conduct their assessment.
