Representatives from 13 municipalities on the Rideau Corridor will be meeting Tuesday to discuss the Rideau Canal’s Budget.

The meeting will be held at 4 p.m. between mayors of municipalities and Federal environment minister Peter Kent.

They are concerned about the potential impact of budget cuts on the operation of the Rideau Canal. In April, the federal government announced a $29.2-million reduction in the budget of Parks Canada, which maintains the canal.

Rideau Lakes Township mayor, Ron Holman tells 1310News, it would have a large impact on their local economy.  “Having so much frontage on the Rideau Canal, it’s a very important piece of property, in relation not only to our businesses but also to tourism.”

Tourism is a key economic driver in the Rideau Lakes.

Holman also feels the UNESCO designation could be in jeopardy in the face of cuts. “It really isn’t addressing the benefits of having that world heritage designation in place”.
