A pair of cyclists are making their way across Canada to raise awareness for cystic fibrosis. David DeWolfe and Olivier Boulais began to pedal on June 15th, sleeping in hotels, homes and even ditches along the way.

DeWolfe, who is from Calgary, decided to cycle for CF after giving piano lessons to a child with the disease.

“Three years ago, I had no idea what cystic fibrosis was,” he told 1310News. “When I met… my piano student, he looked like any other kid. When his parents told me he had cystic fibrosis, I thought ‘oh, that must be some weird strain of the flu. Like, he seems normal. That sucks.’ Then they started explaining to me what it does.”

He said he felt he had to raise awareness for the disease.

“That’s why I’ve made it my campaign and my mission, my fight, to ride across Canada and let as many people in Canada know what cystic fibrosis is. I don’t want there to be one person out there, who doesn’t know what it is. Three years ago I was completely ignorant. Now it’s my job to make sure nobody else is.”

DeWolfe visited Parliament Hill Wednesday. The duo spend three days in Ottawa before continuing east.

The pair began their journey in Victoria, and will eventually finish by dipping their front tires in the Atlantic Ocean in Halifax.
