TORONTO – Premier Dalton McGuinty admits he’s concerned his minority government won’t be able to get any opposition support to impose a new wage contract on Ontario teachers.
McGuinty admits he’ll need help from one opposition party if he has to follow through on his threat to legislate a new teachers’ contract by September 1st.
He says the Liberals tried very hard to negotiate with the unions, and warns the Conservatives would be much tougher on teachers.
The premier says the Liberals are looking for fairness while the Tories are spoiling for a fight with teachers and all public sector unions.
McGuinty also claims the New Democrats are running away from the idea of imposing a public sector wage freeze faster than Jamaican speedster Usain Bolt.
The Liberals won’t say if they plan to designate any legislation to impose a teachers’ contract as a matter of confidence, which would automatically trigger an election if it was defeated.
