Premier Dalton McGuinty says bonuses for senior public servants will be reviewed as the province tries to eliminate a $15 billion deficit.

He made the comments after The Canadian Press reported that almost all eligible managers in the civil service got bonuses last year.

The head of eHealth Ontario recently returned his hefty bonus after it was reported by The Canadian Press.

McGuinty says when so many public servants are receiving bonuses, it becomes pay, not performance pay.

He’s asked all public sector workers to hit the pause button on their compensation to help the government eliminate the deficit in 2017-18.

McGuinty says he’s asked Finance Minister Dwight Duncan to review the pay-for-performance system so it reflects the province’s financial circumstances.
