Ottawa, ON – An icon of Westboro, Moe’s World Famous Newport, is moving.
Owner Moe Atallah announced this week that the Newport would be leaving its location at the corner of Richmond and Churchill, for a smaller spot at the corner of Scott and Churchill.
The Newport will move into Atallah’s other restaurant, Donna’s Express, which is a bit smaller than the current location. The new space seats 92, compared to the 125 seats available at the current location.
Westboro residents say the move is a sign of the times.
“(The restaurant) has been around such a long time, it’s like a staple,” said Ashleigh, a resident of Westboro. “A lot of the shops (around here) are becoming a little more upscale; a little more trendy.”
The current Newport has been the scene of many Christmas dinners for the less fortunate. Atallah’s generosity is legendary.
“I was raised on the street,” Kevin told 1310News. “I would enjoy their meals at Christmastime when they offered their doors open.”
Atallah says the decision to leave his restaurant’s current location has been on the horizon for a while, but leasing out only became reality a few weeks ago.
The Newport is also the home of the Elvis Sighting Society — all of the Elvis memorabilia will be moving down the street, but because Donna’s is a smaller location, not all of it will be on display.
Atallah plans on re-launching the new Newport on January 2nd, with the same menu and service they’re already famous for.
