MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – Peel police have scheduled a news conference at noon, Tuesday, to provide an update on the Mississauga and Toronto body parts case and identify the victim.
Search warrants were executed in both Toronto and Peel region after investigators established a link between the human remains discovered in a Mississauga park and a Scarborough ravine.
Based on evidence and information collected so far, search warrants were issued for numerous locations in both jurisdictions.
One of the places searched by police was a room at the Scarborough Inn, at Kennedy Road and Sheppard. The hotel is located close to the ravine area where body parts were found over the weekend.
The room searched had been occupied by a man who checked in very early Saturday morning and checked out about an hour later.
The victim has yet to be identified but Peel police Sgt. Pete Brandwood said investigators have been going over missing person reports.
“I think we are pretty close to finding out who the victim is,” he said.
Remains found in Scarborough over the weekend were confirmed as human on Monday.
The body parts recovered were an arm, two calves and a thigh.
Police said these remains have “obvious similarities” to the discovery of a head, a foot and two hands found in Mississauga’s Credit River last week.
“Somehow parts of a person body have been discovered in two different locations, and from what we believe it’s the same body,” said Sgt. Brandwood.
The new human remains were found over the weekend in Scarborough — one on Saturday and one on Sunday.
On Saturday, a man came across remains while looking for golf balls at the Tam O’Shanter Golf Course, near Birchmount Road and Sheppard Avenue East, while on Sunday, a suspicious-looking plastic bag was found in a creek near Kennedy Road and Sheppard Avenue East.
Peel police will be the lead investigators in this case, assisted by Toronto police.
Peel police Const. George Tudos said they were contacted by Toronto police but it was not clear whether the find was related to a body parts investigation in Mississauga, where a human head, hands and a foot were found in and near the Credit River.
“They have been in contact with our investigators and we are working together,” Const. Tudos said. “The investigation within Toronto has to do with something that has be found or something in the nature that may be suspicious.”
Police say this investigation has not yet been ruled a homicide because a cause of death has not been determined.
Meanwhile, Peel Police has confirmed they have completed their ground search. The investigation will be moving forward with search warrants and other investigative tools.
However, the Toronto dive team will remain in the Scarborough pond Tuesday to continue their investigation.
Peel and Toronto Police will be attending numerous locations in and around the areas they have been searching. Based on evidence that has been collected, search warrants have been issued.
Police have yet to identify the victim.
