GATINEAU – Nearly one year after the death of Valerie Leblanc her family and the public are still looking for answers.
Gatineau police addressed the press and the public Wednesday morning with an update on the investigation surrounding Leblanc’s murder.
Jean-Paul Le May with the Gatineau Police explained that while they have received 1,500 tips in the last year they are still looking for more.
A command post has been set up at the Cegep de l’Outaouais in the parking lot of the Gabrielle-Roy pavillion for people who want to talk to police in person to discuss something they may have seen on campus on August 23, 2011.
Le May explained that it’s important for people to understand that they should not discount anything spotted that day, anything that may seem trivial or unrelated could be the missing link that can lead police to answers.
In October 2011, the Gatineau police department released a composite sketch of a man who is considered a key witness in the investigation.
The witness of interest is described as a male with olive skin, about 200 pounds with a chubby face, pointed nose and chin.
He was wearing a black jacket and t-shirt with a red and gold logo, black pants and cap. He was walking with a black mountain bike.
Le May hopes that the public will re-familiarize themselves with this sketch and perhaps be less likely to second guess it when they spot someone who looks like the key witness.
Making it even easier for the public to provide tips, the police communications team has set up a mobile platform that allows people to download that composite sketch, and photos of missing persons.
Leblanc’s grandmother, Huguette, said she’ll be surrounded by friends and family on the anniversary of the murder.
“Tomorrow will be one year, but every day is just like the day she died,” said Huguette Leblanc. “Anbody that knows something, I want them to tell.”
Her grandmother also said she was glad to attend the police press conference.
“I could hear all the questions and get all the answers that maybe they wouldn’t have given me, but gave to you.”
The body of the 18 year-old Valerie Leblanc was found on August 23rd 2011, behind the Cegep where she went to school.
Her body was badly beaten and burned.
