If you’ve taken a walk down Sparks Street lately, you may notice more vehicles than usual.
“You’ve got a lot of tradespeople coming in in the morning,” said Les Gagne, the executive director of the Sparks Street Mall. “Most of them are off of the street by 10, according to the bylaw, but over the next probably three to five years, you might see more, simply because of the amount of construction. There’s really no problem with the public using it. It’s really the contractors that are coming in to do the work.”
Gagne said he wanted to ensure work trucks aren’t disturbing the pedestrians.
“Basically, what we are doing, is with bylaw, we’ve asked them to obviously enforce the bylaw up until 10 a.m.,” he said. “For the most part, the tradespeople have been really good to come in and get a permit, but there’s certain areas like block four, where we’ll allow them to park on Sparks Street.”
Block four is the stretch between Bank and Kent Streets.
He said they also want to put up additional signs to ensure tradespeople leave on time.
Bicycles have also been an issue on Sparks Street, with cyclists trying to cut through.
“Sometimes people don’t pay attention to the signs that we have posted, which we’ve added six or eight new ones in the last little bit,” said Gagne. “They’re a problem in the sense that I wish they would take the time to walk their bike and enjoy the sunshine and the beautiful street that it is.”
People can face a fine for cycling or skateboarding down the street.
“If we have to become a bit more strict, if you will, in enforcing the use of bikes and skateboard and vehicles, then we’ll certainly do that,” he said.
Delivery vans are allowed on the street between 7 and 10 a.m. and 6-7 p.m.
