OTTAWA- Ottawa’s Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate a fatal shooting in Blackburn Hamlet.

Witnesses say Levy Kasende, 22, was visiting his ex-girlfriend and 4-month-old daughter Jayla-Marie when a gold SUV entered the housing complex at 2676 Innes Road and shot Kasende six times in the back. When paramedics arrived they tried to revive the victim, but were unsuccessful and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Sarah Lavib, the infant’s mother tells 1310News Kasende was there visiting his daughter.

“I was in the house, but someone ran in the house and told me he was shot,” Lavib said. “Someone ran in the house and told me he’d been shot and then I ran outside and I seen him laying half in the bushes and half in the sidewalk.”

Lavib is appealing to the public to help police as much as they can with their investigation.

“I don’t have any idea (who did this), but whoever did this should really come forward,” Lavib said. “You have to be a sick twisted little freak to do that to a little kid, to do that where she lives, what if he was carrying our daughter?”

The incident happened around 1 a.m. and neighbours say nothing like this has ever happened in the area.

“It’s always really quiet. I’ve never really heard of nothing happen in this neighbourhood,” said one woman who wished to remain nameless. “It’s bad when things like this happen now in the neighbourhood when it’s supposed to be a nice neighbourhood.”

“He was a good father to her,” said Sarah Lavib, the daughters mother. “She was very attached to him.”
