TORONTO, Ont. – A couple from Orillia left Toronto Monday afternoon with a significant amount of money – $25 million to be specific.
Susannah and Ron Higgs say they are avid lottery players, who were shocked when they learned they had won the big prize.
“When I scanned my Lotto Max ticket at the self-checker I thought it might have been an advertisement for Lotto Max when it flashed ‘$25 million’.” Susannah said.
“I quickly grabbed for a pen to sign my ticket and validated it at the cashier, when the bells and whistles went off at the terminal, I watched as my daughter ran around the store all excited,” she added.
The couple says they have played the same Lotto Max numbers for more than two years.
Ron, 59, works for a steel manufacturer and Susannah, 56, works for an engineering company in Orillia.
This is not the first luck the couple has had with the lottery, as they won $10,000 on an Instant Crossword ticket back in 2000. That winning ticket had been a gift in a Christmas stocking.
The couple says they’ll give away at least half to their family.
But there’s one thing they won’t do – quit their day jobs. Both have vowed to be back at work this week.
“It’s important for us to look after (our family) first and then we have a few charities in Orillia that we will give some money to. And then we will take a break and go back to work and decide what we want to do with the rest of our lives,” Susannah said.
The winning ticket was purchased at Daisy Mart at 340 Mississauga Street in Orillia.
