More than one thousand drivers in the Capital ran red lights last year and got away without a fine.

A report, sent to city council’s transportation committee earlier this summer, shows the number of collisions at red-light camera intersections has decreased 12 percent since the implementation of the program.

While these results for the purpose of the program, a new one has arisen since the cameras were installed.

Although the city has 15 red light cameras which are rotated at different intersections, many people aren’t being issued tickets because they aren’t driving Ontario vehicles.

As a result, more than one thousand drivers in the capital ran red lights last year and got away without a fine.

The province’s Highway Traffic Act prevents the city from charging Quebec plated vehicles, even if they are caught driving through a red light on camera.

Chair of the City’s Transportation Committee, Marianne Wilkinson, has petitioned the Province to fix the loophole.
