The Public Service Alliance of Canada has accused the RCMP of ordering a plane to land at Rockliffe Airport on Saturday morning, because it was carrying a banner with a “hateful” message about Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
As part of a campaign P-SAC had been flying a banner over various Quebec festivals, which advertises a website ‘Stephen-Harper-Hates-Us-dot-ca.’
Regional Executive Vice President Larry Rosseau says the plane had only been in the air for an hour-and-a-half when it was forced back to the Tarmac, where he alleges RCMP were waiting.
Rosseau claims he was told the pilot had flown into a restricted zone, and then was later told that they were investigating for security reasons. He says he doesn’t buy that explanation.
“I really, really question that since at no time had the plane violated airspace, I think this was more about the message and taking down the message, because the message maybe hurt the prime minister politically,” Rosseau said.
RCMP Spokesperson Lucy Shorey tells 1310News they did question the pilot for security reasons because the message on the banner was directed at the Prime Minister.
“The plane appeared to be within restricted air space over Parliament Hill and as such, the RCMP requested the plane to land,” said Shorey.
She said there was no threat and the matter has been concluded.
