After losing their parents in a tragic accident, three orphaned girls are now struggling to get money from an insurance company.
Two years ago, Simon Banke struck Leo Paul Regnier and his wife Sherrianne as they were waiting at a bus stop on Albert Street.
Banke has pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death but the Ottawa Citizen is reporting Banke’s insurance company is withholding $800,000 in compensation to the family of the victims.
Due to a loophole in the province’s insurance laws, if a driver is found criminally negligent, the insurance company only has to pay the statutory minimum of $200,000.
Banke will be sentenced on September 27.
