OTTAWA – In the wake of the 174 sinkhole, a new national report card is painting a bleak picture of the state of our roads and pipes.

In Ontario, there is around a ten year backlog of work that has not been completed.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities reported that more than half of Canadian roads and streets are falling apart, and towns and cities just cannot keep up with the repairs.

Engineer Reg Andres said this situation could lead to more sinkholes, or possibly even crumbling elevated expressways in cities like Toronto.

“Those kind of things will be happening, and you need to get there before they do,” said Andres. “That’s why the report card is there, to put focus on these things to make sure we understand what the general condition is.”

Nearly a third of all Canadian roads and pipes the Federation assessed were rated “fair” – or worse.

The Federation is asking for a long term funding program from the Federal Government, to help prevent a bad situation from becoming even worse.
