OTTAWA – Sixty per cent of households in Ottawa are getting a change to their garbage day, and the City is using technology to help remind you what to put out, and when.

The City has designed a new notification system that makes use of phone, email, or twitter.

Councillor Tim Tierney said the City is trying to make it easier for residents to remember when to put out the trash.

“It’ll send you a direct message to your Twitter account saying, hey tomorrow put out green, blue and your garbage,” said Councillor Tim Tierney, giving an example of the new personalized system.

On Friday, Councillor Maria McRae helped show off one of the city’s new trucks — that collect both organic waste and recyclables.

The multi-purpose truck will help save money, as the City of Ottawa moves to bi-weekly trash collection.

“Every week people will have their green bin picked up, and every week they’ll have a recyclable picked up,” said McRae.

You can sign up for the weekly, personalized reminders on the City of Ottawa’s website, or by calling 3-1-1.

Households whose garbage days are changing will also get a letter in the mail, next month.
