OTTAWA-The 30-year-old driver of a garbage truck has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after he accidentally drove his truck into a home in Ottawa’s south end.
Police were called to the scene at 5 Southland Crescent near Karsh Drive at around 1:30 Friday afternoon.
“The truck went through the garage, a car went through the laundry room and the bathroom,” said the woman’s niece, Emilia Cefaloni. “There was a big flood from the bathroom into the basement.”
The water was turned off as crews worked to get the truck out of the building without causing further damage. The truck damaged structural supports for the garage roof, as well as the hydro metre for the home. The front lawn was covered with bricks, tree branches and the panels from the garage door.
Luciana Nardi, 80 was inside the home at the time. She had just left the laundry room two minutes before the crash.
“She’s very nervous. She’s recently widowed so she’s been alone,” said Cefaloni. “She never really liked being on her own and being in the house and taking care of everything and now she’s seeing this as a major catastrophe. She won’t know what to do next.”
Nardi was not injured in the crash.
“She was concerned about the driver and making sure he was okay,” said the woman’s niece, Emilia Cefaloni. “Paramedics checked her out she’s all okay. She’s just shaking, she’s nervous. It’s too much for her to handle.
It took two tow trucks to get the truck out of the garage. One held the garage up to prevent anymore damage to the home while another pulled the truck out. A third smaller tow truck pulled the small car from the garage.
Ottawa Police continue to investigate and there was no immediate estimate of the damage.
