OTTAWA, Ont. - A sense of pride for Canada’s military could be felt in the Capital Sunday morning as 18,000 people, many wearing red or camouflage, took part in the Canada Army Run.
A canon went off to start both the 5K and half marathon, while supporters cheered from the sidelines as the participants made their way along the route. Once participants reached the finish line, they received “dog-tag” medals from soldiers.
Those running or walking were between 4 and 84 years old and most do not have ties to the military.
“The army does a lot for us. This is just a small part of gratitude and to thank them for all their hard work,” said Denis.
While 17 year old Malory told 1310News she has a lot of respect for the Canadian Forces. She thought taking part in the run would be very inspiring to be running alongside them.
Warren is a member of the Canadian Forces who served in Afghanistan and took part in the run. He said a lot of young men and women have suffered because of their service.
“I’ve come back and I’m healthy, but others weren’t as fortunate, which is why I’m running today with my family,” said Warren.
This is the fifth year for the event. When it started in 2008, there were 7000 participants and that number continues to grow every year, with 11,000 more this year compared to its inaugural run.
“It’s a good feeling to see the population rallying around the troops,” said David, a retired soldier.
More than $100,000 was raised from fundraising efforts and an additional $150,000 in proceeds will go to the Military Families Fund and Soldier On.
