The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says it will begin a detailed assessment of the XL Foods plant in Brooks beginning Monday.
The facility check will determine if the plant has adequately addressed deficiencies uncovered as part of the CFIA’s recent E. coli investigation.
Dr. Harpreet Kochhar says based on the results, a recommendation on next steps will be made to senior CFIA officials.
Kochhar says until then, XL’s licence to operate will remain suspended.
“Operations which will be subject to enhanced oversight and specific conditions will only resume at this establishment after the CFIA is fully satisified that the plant has implemented effective controls to manage food safety risks at all stages of production,” says Kochhar.
Meanwhile, the confirmed number of Canadians sickened by the tainted beef has risen to 11.
The latest is a man from Vancouver Island.
Hundreds of products have been recalled across Canada and much of the U-S since E. coli was first detected at the plant early last month.
