OTTAWA, Ont. — The federal government plans to spend $25M to re-brand the Canadian Museum of Civilization to highlight Canada’s heritage and accomplishments.

On Tuesday, Heritage Minister James Moore unveiled a five-year plan which included re-naming the popular tourist spot to The Canadian Museum of History.

The museum’s new moniker is part of a larger drive to create a network of history museums across the country, ahead of Canada’s 150th birthday.

“More than a name, mandate and exhibit change, we want this national museum to truly reach across all of Canada and connect Canada’s museums and historic places together,” said Moore.

The heritage minister said the funding from the government will allow the museum to create linkages with museums across the country to share stories and treasures.

The museum will renovate 50,000 square feet of the building – more than half of its permanent galleries.

The transformation is set to be complete by 2017, just in time for our country’s 150th birthday.
