MONTREAL – There’s been another surprise in Montreal at the public inquiry into alleged corruption in Quebec’s construction industry.
Sylvian Lussier resigned Tuesday as the inquiry’s chief lawyer because of a perceived conflict-of-interest.
Lussier says the matter deals with what he calls “an old file” unrelated to the commission.
Even though he says the allegation is unfounded, he decided to step down to ensure the integrity of the inquiry.
Two months ago, published reports indicated during his time practicing law, he represented an asphalt company that was cited in documents deposited at the inquiry.
The commission heard testimony that the firm over-charged the Quebec government for public-works contracts.
Lussier says he’s confident lawyers working for the inquiry could make up for his departure.
