OTTAWA, On. — Their job is to get you to wherever you want to go in the city safely.

On Sunday, 67 OC Transpo drivers were honoured for their years of collision free driving.

Andres Bastien has been driving buses now for 40 crash-free years.

“When you enjoy what you’re doing, working for the public to their job or wherever they want to go and feeling good about it while making them feel good it makes me feel happy,” Bastien told 1310News. “To be accident free for 40 years, I take it one day at a time. I concentrate on what I have to do. From day one, I’ve always done that and the thrill of being behind the wheel of a bus from day one is still there with me.”

Seventeen other drivers have been driving collision free for more than 30 years while 23 reached the 25 year milestone and 26 have safely driven for 20 years.

“They’re committed, that’s the key. They’re committed to customer service. They’re committed to being safe. They know that safety is the number one priority,” OC Transpo General Manager John Manconi told 1310News. “When you look at what they do, the men and women of OC Transpo want to be the safest operator of a motor vehicle out in that traffic and I’m very, very proud of them.”

Mayor Jim Watson and Chair of the Transit Commission Diane Deans were also on hand to present the awards.

“These operators spend thousands of hours navigating our roads and to remain collision-free for such extebded periods of time is commendable,” said Mayor Watson in a statement. “Each time a resident chooses to leave the driving to OC Transpo they recognize that the transit operators will get them where they need to be, safely and on time.”

To qualify for a ‘Safe Driving Award’ drivers must be on the road for more than 1,000 crash free hours throughout the year in all types of weather.

“In 2011, OC Transpo provided 103.5-million passenger trips and with every trip comes a range of challenges for our bus operators including busy rush hours, tough weather conditions and road construction and detours,” said Councillor Diane Deans in a city statement. “Getting our customers to their destination safely comes from bus operators’ commitment to making customer service a top priority.”
