ST. PAUL, Alta. – Two children are still fighting for their lives after being pinned under a minivan that crashed through a wall of their school in St. Paul, Alberta.
Three children critically injured in yesterday’s crash were airlifted to a hospital in Edmonton 200 kilometres to the west.
Two of them, including an 11 year old girl, remain critical but the third child is now listed as stable.
Five other students at Racette Junior High were treated at a local hospital and released.
The crash terrified the students.
When 14-year-old Simon Chamberland saw some Grade 6 students with bloodied face running down a hallway, crying and screaming, he thought a gunman was on the loose.
The van driver — a 46 year old local man — is in custody as police try to determine whether drugs, alcohol or a possible medical condition were factors in the crash.
The school, meantime, will be closed today, and counsellors will be available to help students and teachers deal with emotional trauma issues.
