OTTAWA, Ont. – Overnight construction is being blamed as the cause of Ottawa’s latest sinkhole.
Work crews from Enbridge accidentally pierced a water main underneath Elgin Street at around 2 a.m. That in turn washed away the dirt supporting the downtown traffic artery, causing a section of the street to collapse. Police closed the southbound lanes of Elgin between Laurier Avenue and Lisgar Street, and reduced northbound traffic to one lane. The area reopened early Saturday morning.
While this latest pavement crater isn’t causing the same kind of traffic headaches as the infamous 174 sinkhole – crews worked quickly to fix the problem on Friday – the Elgin Street sinkhole has taken to Twitter like its predecessor.
Using the handle @ElginStSinkhole, Mr. Elgin’s bio reads “I was jealous of the 174.” But this time, it’s a new voice behind the tweets. Jason Ibell, the creator of the @174sinkhole account, said he’s keeping his distance from the latest account.
“I though I’d leave this one alone, and see who would come forward and claim the identity,” Ibell told 1310News, adding he considers himself Ottawa’s unofficial sinkhole inspector. “Just to try and get some perspective from the other end, watching someone tweet it.”
Mayor Jim Watson told 1310News that the City won’t be paying for the repair work to Elgin, the construction company that burst the water main will be fronting the bill.
