OTTAWA, Ont. – Colonel By Drive has reopened after a single vehicle collision sent a car careening into Rideau Canal.

The vehicle skidded about 75 feet and struck a retaining wall, before plunging roughly 20 feet into the muddy bottom of the drained Rideau Canal.

Ottawa Fire Services responded at 4:10 a.m. Thursday to the intersection of Colonel By Drive and University Road.

The driver, a man in his 20′s, was extricated from their vehicle and taken to hospital in stable condition.

Ottawa Police are investigating.

A section of Colonel By Drive, from Hogs Back Road to University Road, was closed while R.C.M.P. investigated, but has since reopened.
