OTTAWA, On – John McCrae wrote “In Flanders Field” and on Friday, students at the high school named after him honoured those who fought for our country.
In a dark gymnasium, Grade 12 students and veterans pinned up poppies to read “Lest We Forget.” There was also a moment of silence, readings for students and the laying of the wreaths in front of a white cross.
“By bringing a lot of veterans here, it makes it more real for us to see how much the past impacts our future,” said student Jordan. “We don’t always look back on how our country is free.”
The annual Remembrance Day event was a particularly important day for Grade 12 student Mackenzie. Her father served in Afghanistan and was there for the assembly.
“It felt better than celebrating when he was gone, ” Mackenzie told 1310News. “But, it felt good because he survived and helped fight for freedom, which makes me proud.”
Students also collected money for Operation Veterans, which is a program that assists veterans.
