Ottawa’s Auditor General Alain Lalonde released 11 audit reports and six follow-up reports Thursday at city hall.
Lalonde found that if OCTranspo changed their scheduling software and added a half hour to operator’s days an additional $3.1 million to $4.5 million dollars could be found.
“Unfortunately by having the arbitration at 12 the city is not achieving their goal,” said Lalonde. “So what we recommend to the city is, yes they’re in arbitration and we have to respect that, but if it’s something council wants to consider they should include it in their future collective bargaining negotiations.”
In another report on OC Transpo the Auditor General found the city failed to send passengers text alerts or emails when they enrolled in the system consistently.
“Of the 55 separate cancellations we examined, communication was accurate and timely in only 7 cases,” states Alain Lalonde.
Lalonde recommended the city regularly monitor these notifications, but OCTranspo GM John Manconi says these alerts are now all working.
“I believe that when they were doing the audit they found some glitches on that and now we’ve closed that gap,” said Manconi.
Some of Lalonde’s other findings include a potential $800,000 savings by initiating a competitive tender for snow removal and he also found $58 million dollars in salaries unaccounted for.
All the reports can be found on the City of Ottawa’s website.
