OTTAWA, Ont. – The Ottawa man charged with first-degree murder in the death of his mother has been ordered to undergo a 30 day psychiatric assessment.
According to the Sun, it was just two years ago that Rene Goodreau, 30, was deemed not a threat to the public. He was the subject of of a report written in 2010, after an attack on his father.
Goudreau is accused of murder after his mother’s body was found in her burned out apartment in the west end Tuesday. He made a brief court appearance Wednesday morning following a session with a forensic psychiatrist. His lawyer says he has a history of mental illness including bipolar disorder, has been in and out of the Royal Ottawa Hospital and has never been able to hold a job.
Goudreau will make a third court appearance on December 28th.
Fire crews were called to a high rise around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday where a fire had broken out inside a first floor apartment at 90 Woodridge Crescent, near the Bayshore Shopping Centre.
The body of Lucy Goodreau, 53, was discovered in the bedroom of the unit. This is Ottawa’s sixth homicide of 2012.
