OTTAWA, Ont. — It appears the American phenomenon of Black Friday and Cyber Monday is gaining popularity in Canada.
A survey for Moneris Solutions finds Black Friday sales were up 6.51 per cent while on Cyber Monday, sales rose more than 22 per cent compared to last year.
This points to a good holiday shopping season for retailers, according to Malcolm Fowler of Moneris.
“I don’t think there’s much doubt that these two events are becoming more and more entrenched in the Canadian retailers psyche,” Fowler told 1310News. “The Black Friday stuff is another example of how retailers in Canada are adapting to try and keep customers here.”
The increase on Black Friday was driven by a 15 per cent jump in the sale of electronics while Cyber Monday posted a 112 per cent increase in online shoe sales.
