OTTAWA – In a rare move, all three opposition parties will band together Thursday to submit petitions to the House of Commons calling for a Royal Commission and a criminal investigation into misleading robocalls during the 2011federal election campaign.
Elizabeth May of the Green Party, Stephane Dion of the Liberal Party and the NDP’s Craig Scott will each present a portion of signatures at 10:15 a.m.
Over 1,500 signatures were gathered from Canadians by two citizen activists, Tara Ferrell and Jonathan Allan. Ferrel solicited signatures from her website TheFightForDemocracy.com, while Allan organized protests which saw up to 3000 attendees in Toronto.
Elections Canada investigators have now collected robocall complaints in 56 ridings across the country.
The calls were both recorded and live and in some cases, the caller claimed to be from Elections Canada, or from one of the parties, and would direct the voter to an erroneous or non-existent polling station.
Some calls were rude, others came in the middle of the night.
