OTTAWA, ON — The jury in the inquest into the 2010 drowning death of two-year-old Jérémie Audette at an unlicensed daycare, has submitted 16 recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
The recommendations include not allowing pools of any kind – in-ground, above-ground or kiddie – at private home day cares and having unlicensed daycares register with the Ontario Ministry of Education.
It’s also being recommended that municipalities consider pool enclosure by-laws – which means pools are to be entirely closed off and entrances to buildings (windows or doors) are not part of the enclosure.
“We can’t take water for granted,” said Alain Audette, Jeremie’s father. “We have to be aware at all times when kids are in the water.”
City staff will review the recommendations and report back to the committee and council.
