OTTAWA, Ont. — A blast of winter weather  caused a number of school bus cancellations for eastern Ontario Monday.

School buses were cancelled for the Ottawa Carleton District School Board, the Ottawa Catholic School Board, the Upper Canada District School Board, the Catholic School Board of Eastern Ontario and their corresponding French-language boards.

School buses were also cancelled for Renfrew Country, with the exception of buses going to Whitney Elementary.

The majority of schools in the region remain open. The Life Christian Academy in Orleans and the Ottawa Waldorf School in Stittsville are both closed.

The Rink of Dreams at Ottawa City Hall was also closed due to the weather conditions.

The blast from old man winter arrived Sunday night in the capital, bringing flurries that changed into freezing rain overnight.

Light freezing rain continued Monday morning, making for a nasty commute.

The freezing rain changed to rain Monday afternoon before the rain tapered off as the mercury rises above 0 Celsius.

“Now we have another band moving up from the south west and it extends into southern Quebec,” said 1310News meteorologist Jill Taylor.
