OTTAWA, Ont. – One person was injured after a mattress caught fire in the basement unit of a three-storey apartment building.

Fire crews were called to 303 King Edward Avenue at 6:21 p.m. on Wednesday, where smoke was reported coming from the basement.

The fire at the 30-unit residential building was under control within a half hour.

One person was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and an OC Transpo bus was used to harbour evacuated residents until they were cleared to return to the building.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and damage is estimated at $60, 000.
