OTTAWA, ON – It is officially Winterlude in the capital.
An opening ceremony was held Friday evening to celebrate the start of the 35th year of the festival.
There were musical performances, aerial dancers swinging from the side of the City Hall building, fireworks and a DJ dance party.
Many people gathered at Confederation Park before the ceremony to see the ice sculptures, lantern garden and enjoy a Beavertail.
“I think this is cool,” Noah told 1310News. “I’ve never seen ice sculptures while they are being made.”
Many say they plan on coming back and also skating the Rideau Canal.
Confederation Park opened at 8 a.m. on Friday and the entire Rideau Canal Skateway opened at 2 p.m. The Snowflake Kingdom at Jacques Cartier Park in Gatineau at 9 a.m. Saturday. The opening was delayed due to last week’s mild weather.
