The City of Ottawa is looking for a few good app developers.

A new and improved Apps4Ottawa contest was launched, Monday, to get software developers to create mobile apps using the City’s data.

The contest is open to any entrepreneur, student, IT professional, agency or individual in Canada. This year’s edition of Apps4Ottawa offers $38,000 in prizes, provided through corporate sponsorships.

“Within the four categories, there (are) prize allotments of five thousand, three thousand and different values, depending on what category it’s in,” explained Councillor Tim Tierney.

Tierney says running a contest is much cheaper than what it would cost to find and hire a software developer to create apps for the City.

“If we tried to do this on our own as a city, to even try to create some of these applications, you could be talking tens, to even hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of developments,” Tierney told 1310News.

The contest is open from now until March 11. Details are on the Apps4Ottawa website.
