OTTAWA – A massive four-alarm fire in Chinatown has been ruled accidental, caused by roofing work.

The fire broke out around 11 a.m. Wednesday, near the intersection of Somerset Street W and Percy Street, and burned for more than three hours.

Several businesses have been destroyed, including The Daily Grind cafe, the Middle East Bakery, the Shiraz Market and the tattoo shop Dark Cloud. Damage is pegged in excess of $1 million.

The buildings included residential space as well; everyone was evacuated, but seven people have been left homeless. Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries on scene.

Witnesses had said the fire started on the roof where contractors were working, though it wasn’t confirmed until Thursday morning.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office is helping with the investigation.

Hoping for a speedy recovery for the fire fighters, also hoping the seven people left homeless can move on quickly. Sad to see Middle East Bakery gone.
