OTTAWA — A 61 year-old man from Alfred is facing a charge of carrying an insecure load after a horse fell out of a trailer in the middle of Highway 401 near Prescott.

Police said the back door of the livestock trailer wasn’t secure and the horse was found lying injured on the highway Friday afternoon.

Traffic was stopped while people helped the animal and as police searched for the truck and trailer.

The animal was then loaded back into the trailer and taken to a veterinarian.

The OSPCA and Canadian Food Inspection Agency are continuing to investigate.
