OTTAWA – A highrise fire in the city’s east end has left one person without a place to stay.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Monday, Ottawa Fire Services received a 911 call from a resident on the fifth floor of a 21-storey building at 251 Donald St.

The resident reported alarms going off in the building and a person calling for help from a floor below them.

Residents were evacuating from the building when crews arrived on the scene and a working fire was declared in the kitchen of a fourth floor unit.

The fire — contained to the kitchen area — was under control by 6:02 p.m.

There were no injuries and the cause if considered accidental due to cooking.

Damage is pegged at $60,000.
