Doors Open Ottawa takes residents behind the scenes

More than 100 buildings across the city that are normally closed off will open their doors this weekend as part of the 2013 edition of Doors Open Ottawa.

Visitors can see how precious metals are melted at the Royal Canadian Mint, tour the U.S. Embassy or tour Mayor Jim Watson’s office overlooking Elgin Street.

One Ottawa City Councillor said it’s all about getting a peek inside buildings that are usually off limits.

“Who wouldn’t want a tour of our sewage treatment plant here in the City of Ottawa,” said Councillor Steve Desroches. “It’s a fascinating engineering facility that I’m sure we don’t really think about when we’re flushing the toilet.”

If that doesn’t interest you, there are plenty of other sites to explore, including the OC Transpo industrial garage, the Ottawa Main Mosque or the kitchen at Le Cordon Bleu. You can also go behind the scenes at Mayfair Theatre.

There will be a free shuttle bus travelling within walking distance of 50 participating buildings. An estimated 80,000 people flocked to the event in 2012.
