Porn viewing goes unpunished at Ottawa libraries

OTTAWA — An Ottawa mother is asking that local libraries bar pornography from being accessed on their computers.

An incident at the Greenboro branch back in July left Jennifer St. Pierre and her two daughters disgusted.

St. Pierre tells the Carol Anne Meehan Show she was browsing the library when one of the kids spotted a man on a public computer watching porn.

She wasn’t sure she believed her daughter until she saw it for herself.

“I was very shocked, and after talking to the kids on the way home about it, them saying what they saw, I was just mad,” says St. Pierre.

“I just thought, ‘This isn’t right. This shouldn’t be happening.”

St. pierre called the library the following day, but was told it is against its code of conduct to tell anyone what they can and cannot watch online.

Defence Attorney Michael Spratt, also on the Carol Anne Meehan Show, says what the man was caught doing may actually be illegal, if St. pierre wanted to take things to criminal court.

However, he thinks bringing the issue to the public’s attention might actually be better than bringing it to court.

Spratt believes we should be “mature enough as a society to address the issue” by making changes to the library system and reaching out to mental health professionals who may need to help the vulnerable population using public computers for the purpose of watching explicit content.
