Brazil human rights group calls for inquiry into shooting

RIO DE JANEIRO — A human rights group in Brazil is calling for an independent inquiry into the possible use of sharpshooters by police in a Rio de Janeiro neighbourhood.

Human Rights Watch Brazil said Monday that witnesses had seen shots fired from a police tower that killed two men and wounded a third. The group said the men were shot not far from the city’s main police complex.

Police officials were not immediately available to comment, but Brazilian news media said authorities are investigating the claim.

The report comes as the new governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro promised to crack down on crime, one of the state’s biggest problems. Gov. Wilson Witzel has floated ideas that include using sharpshooters during police operations with authority to kill drug traffickers.
