OTTAWA — Highway 174 will stay closed between Trim Road and Cameron Street through the afternoon and evening commute because of an earlier tractor-trailer rollover.
Ottawa Fire HAZMAT crews and outside companies are cleaning up about 300L of fuel spilled from the truck’s gas tank.
Excavators are being brought in to remove soil contaminated by the fuel at the site of the crash.
“They’ll just basically remove as much of the soil that they can see is visibly contaminated,” said Marc Messier, Ottawa Fire public information officer. “They’ll be doing soil samples to make sure they get it all.”
More workers are out on the Ottawa River, skimming the surface of the water to remove the diesel fuel. Absorbent booms have also been placed along the edge of the water to gather fuel that makes it to shore.
The truck was transporting a non-dangerous sand product. It has since been cleaned up from the crash site.
