ALMONTE, Ont. – Two-term Mississippi Mills town councillor Bernard Cameron, 65, has been identified as the victim in a shooting Thursday morning in a home in the town.
Town mayor Shaun McLaughlin says the town CAO called him in the morning to inform him about the shooting, which he described as a “domestic gone bad.”
Cameron’s daughter Sarah, 28, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. She is currently in stable condition.
The alleged shooter, Travis Porteous, 33 of Carleton Place, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. OPP confirm he has since died.
McLaughlin said the community was reeling, shocked that something like this could happen in the town.
Sarah’s two children and Cameron’s wife are with other family members, said McLaughlin.
OPP have not, as yet, confirmed the incident was a shooting, nor whether it was a targeted or domestic-related incident.
Police say only that there is no further risk to the public and there are no other suspects being sought.
A vigil was held for Cameron at Almonte old town hall Thursday evening.
