You might have to dig into your wallet if you're planning on taking a taxi during the wee hours of the morning.

The Calgary Cab Drivers Association wants to implement a $3 surcharge on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, on fares between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. .

The extra cash will help pay for vehicle up-keep and security upgrades.

Despite new taxi stands around the city, Calgarians are still having problems finding cabs. Kurt Enders, Checker Cab vice president, tells the Sun that it comes down to supply and demand.

He says some companies are now looking at implementing online bookings, allowing users to secure a ride home in advance.

Compared to the rest on the continent, Calgary has a fairly high cab-to-population ratio with 12.9 taxis to 10,000. That compares to 9.4 in Vancouver and 4.3 in Denver.
